“You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.” Deuteronomy 13:4
Follow…fear…obey…listen…serve…hold fast.
I’ve never been one to just fall in line. It is hard for me to follow and I have a grave dislike for being part of “the crowd.” Yet, so often God says, “follow me,” beckoning me to leave my own desires aside and fall in line with His will. At times I feel like it is against my natural bend, but in the end I have to realize that following actually sets me a part for a specific purpose.
The steps to following God are simple in concept: fear, obey, listen, serve and hold fast. At first glance these may seem conquerable, but when you try, the tasks are much harder to act out.
To have a deep revere for the Lord demands my humility.
To be able to take His direction means I have to be thoroughly familiar with His commandments.
To hear His voice require intimacy in order to know what He sounds like when He speaks.
To serve Him with wild abandon calls for complete availability to His promoting at any moment.
To cling to Him with my entire self to the depths of my soul means I have to trust His sovereignty.
Humility…familiarity…intimacy…availability… sovereignty.
Right now I am petrified to follow hard after God, but I know there are no other options. Though His length of His steps are overwhelming at times, there is nowhere else I rather plant my feet then in the footprints His is leaving as He walks before me.

I think it is sweet that my parent's have devotions together nearly every morning of the week. Recently, after having their time in God's word and a devotional book together they decided to send me this exerpt. I wanted to pass it on to you...
Our Savior says to us:
"I am your king and ruler of all things. When the wind blows and the waves crash against the side of your lifeboat, let Me steer you to safety. I'm not only the captain of your ship, I can also control the storm. I know you like to feel you're in control by holding on to the wheel with all your strength, but I have you and your future under control. Who knows you better than I do? I don't want you to keep exhausting yourself trying to rebuild your life after another ship wreck. I am the One who takes what is broken and rebuilds it even better than before. So give your life back to Me. I will calm your storm, or I will clear the rough waters; either way, you will be safe with Me!"

In the economy of God’s kingdom, leadership is upside down. The world’s way of earning power, honor, stature and authority is by working hard to be the best among all those around you. However, God intended it to be quite the opposite.
Jesus is Lord and truly superior to all. Yet, when given the earthly opportunity to teach His disciples how to lead, he voluntarily put himself in subjection to His disciples – and thus, servant leadership was born. He did not only tell us that we must become the lowest in the kingdom to be the greatest, but He showed us (John 13:1-17).
Sadly, too often even us as Christ-followers work ‘the system’ to gain power, recognition and titles that give us authority over those around us. Like a drug we become addicted to demanding our way, thinking we know what is best, and using those under us as a stepping stool to reach our own dreams. Yes, this has even infiltrated the Church and tainted the ones who declare they are living like Christ.
In order to avoid spiritual bankruptcy in God’s economy, we must become servants to all. Those who are called to leadership, and have earned it, must not act as fathers, teachers or masters, but as servants (Matthew 23:8-12). In doing so, we will impact the world far greater than we ever could by being stuck on ourselves and our own goals. Allow Christ to be the proof of that fact.
